The Cheapest House in LA
A part of David's Dream House

You may have looked through this web page with a bit of dismay. "Surely," you might say, "there is some inexpensive real estate someplace in the city?"

Well, yes. There is. And I was determined to find it. Through the magic of ListingLink, I searched through massive numbers of homes in a desperate effort to find an affordable home. And I succeeded.

Located conveniently in what realtors coyly call "Los Angeles Southwest" (more bluntly called South Central LA, or where those tiresome riots were in 1992), one of the two homes you see here is for sale at only $ 21,000 - not even enough for a half-decent car. Sadly, my photographs make the residence look in significantly better shape than it actually is; the impression on site is that the home is in imminent danger of collapse.

It was not easy to find this house. It is technically on a street called St Andrews, which does not run through the area in question. Instead, there is a mysterious "Saint Andrews" sign fronting a narrow pedestrian alley. A bit of questioning of the natives indicates that yes, the alley actually was Saint Andrews. After that, it was simple enough to make a reconnisance mission to find the house. Only after I saw it appeared free of unsafe denizens did I bring my camera to get these pictures.

You may have noticed that I actually got pictures of two homes. Neither had street numbers, but both were in about the same condition, so I think either would go for about the same price.

The natural setting of these homes includes a number of pretty good looking trees, but the adjacent, trash-filled vacant lots does a lot to ruin the ambiance. The stench of trash is pervasive, apparent even to my normally insensitive nose.

If you're reading this web page, the odds are pretty good you don't want to live here. Honest.

If you're interested, see the listing agent for additional details and information. Or see them anyway; I liked their creative icons (sharks for tenant-occupied property, skull and crossbones for bad area, etc).
