The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade December 20, 1998

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade is one of those events that you should
see in person, at least once in your lifetime. A modest community of multi-million
dollar homes, Newport Beach is known as a major yachting centre. As one might
expect, when you mix the resources of a community like this with the desire to
create an awesome spectacle, you get one heck of a party.
And so it proved. These pictures were taken off one of the docks in
Lido Island. The weather conditions, despite the promise of rain
previously, were darn near perfect. The boats - as you can see in the
pictures - were gorgeous. The enjoyably loud sounds of an excellent
live band drifted across the water from one of the luxurious homes,
providing us with a free concert, complete with modest dancing on the
docks, for those who felt so inclined. (My heavy camera and lack of
a partner didn't help).
The awesome nature of the production, with some entrants spending thousands
of dollars, is something that keeps me coming back every year. And this year,
I had a wonderful digital camera - a Canon XL1 MiniDV - with which to capture
the action.
I hope you'll enjoy these pictures. Drop me a line if you do.
