Cooley, RTC, Erlich, and the moonBy davidson@sfsu.edu (Daniel Davidson)26 Jun 1995 13:32:59 GMT Subject: Re: Favorite moments in Judge Whyte's courtroom Newsgroups: alt.religion.scientology References: <3si6n1$hos@news.csus.edu> <tomklemDArutw.JzB@netcom.com> Organization: San Francisco State University Distribution: Mr. Cooley impressed me as an avuncular and really kindly-seeming man. I bear no personal emnity towards him whatsoever; in fact, I respect his obvious faith, his humor, and his professionalism. He had the unenviable position of defending RTC's untenable, conflicted positions. RTC, like all entities corporate or otherwise, deserves adequate, vigorous counsel. On the other hand, Mr. Cooley's litigous intent is to crush and as LRH directed, utterly destroy Dennis Erlich, whom I like and admire. It is not Mr. Cooley who floundered so decisively at Friday's legal battle. Rather, it was (again) the *behavior* of those designing RTC's response to the new paradigm of Internet communication who have so badly mangled the social fabric, leading to Mr. Erlich's *own* need for vigorous, competent counsel. Such counsel has unquestionably been found in Morrison and Forester. It is not, I would guess, Mr. Cooley who orchestrated the *very* questionable seizures of Dennis Erlich's property, and by extension, the violation of Erlich's personal soverignty over his own affairs. Mr. Cooley, by his own admission, does not seek to silence even, as he said, "Erlich's vitupertive criticism of Scientology". It is no hyperbole to say that those who orchestrated Mr. Cooley's court room goals seek to damage the free-flow of ideas and belief on the Internet, in a vain attempt to continue the virtual free hand of RTC to limit or punish criticism of Scientology. This is simply unacceptable. It is a position that is against the grain of hugely powerful social and technological forces, which RTC can no more prevail against than a child who would reach up and halt the moon's tour of the night sky. -- == Daniel Davidson == davidson@sfsu.edu ** Don't hit.
