they probably don't think the cost of cataloging and marking the texts is worth it. about half the books that are donated to libraries never make it to the shelves, because the library already has enough copies of the book in question, they don't feel the book is appropriate for their collection, or the book is not in good enough condition. libraries invariably sell off such books, either in booksales, to book collectors, or to book resellers, in order to raise money to buy the books they _do_ want.

it costs between $5 and $20 to process a book (a bit less if it's a second or later copy).

not only a discount, but a buck that the CoS never gets! your dollar goes _entirely_ to fund your local library, which is almost certainly a better cause than the Church of Scientology. libraries rarely harass people or lock them in steam tunnels.
