Large law firms usually don't steal small amounts of money. The risk/benefit analysis is just too bad.

It is not the money, it is the publicity. Here are a couple of reasons:

1) It looks good for the public in large. The defenders of poor Erlich against the mighty C0$.

2) Publicity. The story creates media interest and sooner or later MoFo will have an opportunity to talk about that.

3) They think (rightly or wrongly) that they are going to win, and a winning record bring clients. Especially winning against a good fighter like the Co$.

4) The Co$ *fights*. If it will fight all the way to the Supreme Court MoFo will have the rear opportunity to argue in the highest court, more free public relations.
