Truth is stranger than fiction. What about the influence of
Science Fiction on scientology?
It's a Flash Gordon religion with a tinsel-clad bogey man at its
heart. The Mud Men have rescued Princess Leia and Ming the Merciless
is masquerading as a guy call Xenu.
Everybody's living backwards; you're a machine. We can remember it
for you wholesale, just hold the cans. Jubal Harcourt's evil twin
Laffy invented a religion. You are invited to leave your brain at
home.
Flash has gone over the cliff and its the end of the episode, but
you just know that next episode will show him clinging for safety
to the running board of a passing air-car. He'll escape detection
by hiding in the car's rumble seat, infiltrate the evil Ming's
invasion fleet and foil the plot to steal the Martian water.
No wonder Ken Long believes the visual attention flickers at 25Hz.
He's living in a never-ending movie matinee in which inventors
make great discoveries that turn science on its head in a single,
endless magic popsicle-smelling Saturday morning. Yeah, I just
had to tack a bit of Bradbury on the end.
Now I know what the E-meter reminds me of--a theramin, the instrument
they used to create the theme music for Forbidden Planet. Just
remember: we control the horizontal, we control the vertical.
