I know it's meant in jest, but remember that this group continues to attract lots of new readers. Let's deal with the clams using human ethics rather than clam ethics. As for why the C<s>oS continues to use Ingram, I've been able to come up with several possible explanations: 1) They want to use someone with a bad record because they think it will intimidate people. An organization run by rational people wouldn't think that a PI who uses aliases like "Jack Hoff" would be particularly intimidating, but the C<s>oS isn't run by rational people. 2) They want to use someone with a bad record so that if he ever gets caught and turns state's evidence, his testimony against them won't be credible. If so, however, they're willingly settling for lower quality service in return for deniability. 3) Ingram has cultivated the art of telling the C<s>oS's leaders what they want to hear. As I've mentioned in other threads, people who hold power in authoritarian organizations want to hear only good news, not bad news, and surround themselves with yes-men. Eventually they lose touch with reality and come to believe the filtered BS they're being fed. When they reach this stage, they'd rather hire a PI who tells them made-up stories about how the opposition has been neutralized than one who tells them the truth about their losses. 4) Ingram is aware of information about C<s>oS management that could be damaging, and they're employing him to keep his mouth shut. Several other posters have suggested this. 5) The C<s>oS is the only organization that would hire Ingram to do detective work. If they were to drop him, he'd have to find another line of work, such as locating missing dogs, with poodles a specialty. My guess is that it's mostly a combination of 3) and 4).
