Book of the Month

Creating Killer Web Sites
By David Siegel
Visit the book's web site

Some people call him a genius. Others call him unprintably arrogant. Both are right. His book is a rich, creamy beauty of a creation that shows how absolutely lush and luscious you can make a book if you have a nearly-unlimited production budget.
The cold truth is that I've learned a lot from reading it, and I've enjoyed its beauty. I would buy this book -- I did and don't regret it. Approach it with an open mind, and realize that he's an interesting guy who knows a lot -- but not as much as he thinks.
One important thing to note about this book is that, unlike the other books here, it is not a nuts and bolts book for the most part; it's a book about potentials and how to fulfill them. You need a very thorough grounding in HTML 3.0+ before you can even understand what he's doing. Experience with Photoshop wouldn't hurt either.
That caveat aside, this is a fascinating book and I recommend it highly. It will challenge your mind -- and that's a lot of what the web is about in the first place.
PS If David Siegel visits this site, he'll probably have a heart attack when he sees me using <table border ...> around his own book. That's one of the reasons I made it Book of the Month!

Designing Web Graphics
By Lynda Weinman

Designing Web Graphics is a beautiful book written by a very friendly lady who knows her craft well. This is an excellent book if you're already an artist, but want to know and understand the special issues involved in designing for the web. It covers, in a nuts and bolts fashion, issues such as minimizing the number of colours in your image, and dealing with different browsers and cross-platform (PC versus Mac) issues.
Lynda also has a mailing list, which you can join through her web site

Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML in 14 Days
By Laura Lemay

Laura Lemay has created a nice little empire through her excellent books on HTML and Java. When I first decided to learn HTML back in 1994, her book was there, one of the first on the shelf. It was called "Teach yourself HTML in a week", and it took me about two days to get through. So I don't know about her timing, but her books are superb: Well-written, clear and with neat crazy examples that keep you reading.
